Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The legacy of Sonya Massey, the Black woman killed by police July 6 inside her Springfield home, could include legislation to better weed out bad cops.
The Massey family’s lawyers are laying out what they want. Tony Romanucci, says the Safe-T Act failed here.
“What we aim to do is improve the Safe-T Act so a Sean Grayson could not happen again. It can ot happen. The Sonya Massey Act will stop the ticking (time bomb). It will stop the explosion.”
They’re calling for, among other things, a national database that, for example, the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office could have checked before hiring a deputy. Another element could be a waiting period when a cop wants to move to another department. The waiting period would allow more time for background checks than was available to, say, Sangamon County when it hired Grayson.
