Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The gymnasium at the Downtown YMCA in Springfield will soon officially bear the name of State Sen. Doris Turner. A dedication ceremony and ribbon-cutting event is set for Wednesday, September 4 at 12 p.m. The “Doris Turner Gymnasium” recognizes Turner’s support and efforts in securing funding for the YMCA building located at 601 N. 4th St., which was completed in 2020.
Angie Sowle, CEO of the Springfield YMCA, praised Senator Turner for her unwavering support. “Senator Turner has been a strong advocate for children and underserved people in our community. Her support of our Y has been key to helping us serve kids and the less fortunate with our programs and new building,” Sowle said. She emphasized the importance of partnerships between the community and government, highlighting Turner’s dedication to improving the lives of local children.
“As a lifelong Springfield resident, this is a tremendous honor to have the Downtown YMCA Gymnasium named after me,” said Turner. “This is full circle for me as I’ve seen my kids and grandkids grow up in a YMCA gym. I hope it will serve as a safe place for children and families to enjoy for years to come.”
The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce will lead the ribbon-cutting ceremony, with a reception to follow.
