(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Millikin University in Decatur is launching the Big Blue STEM Scholars project thanks to a six-year $1 million grant. The funding comes from the National Science Foundation Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Program, and the program will start in fall 2025.
At least 15 full-time first-year or transfer students pursuing degrees in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics will be eligible for the scholarships. The project is designed to support high-achieving, low-income students with demonstrated financial need, helping them to complete their STEM degrees and pursue careers in these fields.
The program aims to increase the number of STEM graduates, particularly from underrepresented groups, and strengthen the university’s STEM programs. Students eligible for the scholarships must meet Millikin’s admissions requirements, be Pell Grant-eligible, and maintain good academic standing. The scholarships will cover significant portions of tuition, housing, and other expenses, potentially offering full tuition for many Illinois students. Additionally, the program includes stipends for summer research and various professional development activities, supported by local and regional industry and government partners.
