Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – What they may have lacked in seaworthiness they more than made up for in creativity as an armada of colorful watercraft took to the shores of Lake Macoupin on the campus of Lincoln Land Community College Friday Morning.

It was the 3rd annual charity Cardboard Boat Regatta sponsored by the LLCC campus police.

Campus police chief, Chris Russell, told WTAX News students, faculty and staff are all invited to participate in the fun event. He says it is meant to build the campus community and show off the beauty of the serene lake behind Menard Hall.

Some of the 9 boats had themes ranging from bathtime fun to pirates to Viking ships.

Freshman Josh Atkinson, who looked very much like Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow, and who helmed “Professor McDonald’s Revenge”, hopes to have a career in Mechanical Engineering.  He says he spent the last five months learning everything he could about boat design.

Enrollment Splashta$tic had their bathtub-themed boat decked out in rubber duckies and balloons.
