Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – “Justice delayed is justice denied.”

That’s what a Springfield Black leader is saying about the latest move in the Sonya Massey case.

Monday’s status hearing was put off until Dec. 2, presumably awaiting an appellate ruling which could allow former deputy Sean Grayson to go free pending trial.

Defense lawyer Mark Wykoff told WTAX News he expects the case to go to trial. Where is unknown.

That Grayson killed Sonya Massey in her home is not in dispute, but he is claiming self-defense. She called the sheriff’s department early July 6 to report a possible break-in. Grayson said she brandished a pot of boiling water, and he believed his life was in danger.

Would Judge Ryan Cadigan, who at arraignment seemed to buy into the prosecution’s contention Grayson’s dangerous, let Grayson walk out? Teresa Haley, former Springfield NAACP president says … who knows.

Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser declined the opportunity to comment.
