Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW)City Water, Light and Power is one of 45 U.S. public power utilities to earn the 2024 Smart Energy Provider designation from the American Public Power Association. The award recognizes CWLP’s excellence in energy efficiency, distributed energy resources, renewable energy, and environmental stewardship, along with its commitment to affordable electric service.

CWLP scored well for its smart energy initiatives, including an incentivized rate structure for customer-owned solar in its net metering program, a wind energy contract extending to 2038, and the 2020 Integrated Resource Plan that led to the retirement of three coal-fired units. Additionally, CWLP received recognition for research partnerships like the Dallman Unit 4 Carbon Capture Pilot with the University of Illinois and for demand-side programs from energy audits to efficient appliances and the 250 kW mySolar subscription program.

The APPA announced CWLP’s Smart Energy Award on October 28 at its Customer Connections Conference in Louisville, Kentucky.
