Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Two teens were arrested Monday night by Springfield Police after a search of their vehicle netted two loaded firearms. The 17-year-olds were pulled over for a traffic stop in the 1700 block of E. Cook Street. During the stop, SPD reports officers spotted improperly packaged cannabis, which led them to search the vehicle and its occupants.
The teens were found to be in possession of two firearms – a 9mm and a .380. One had been reported stolen in Decatur. The teens were arrested and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a stolen firearm, having a firearm without a FOID card, and unlawful possession of firearms and firearms ammunition.
Even though they met the criteria for being held in a juvenile facility, SPD released them to family due to a lack of space at any of the state juvenile detention facilities.
