A St. Louis man wanted on homicide charges was taken into custody by US Marshals and Springfield Police Thursday just before 11 a.m. During the incident in the 2700 block of S. MacArthur Blvd., 29-year-old Deondre Powell attempted to run, but was taken to the ground by officers. The suspect, while resisting arrest, fired his handgun in the direction of Springfield officers. The suspect was tased while officers struggled over the firearm. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody.

Powell was wanted on a warrant out of St. Louis and a parole warrant from the Illinois Department of Corrections. He faces charges of attempted homicide, aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, resisting arrest, and aggravated battery to a police officer.

Powell remains in custody at the Sangamon County Jail pending formal charges by the Sangamon County State’s Attorney. Three Springfield Police Officers suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from local hospitals.
