Discovery recount scheduled for Sangamon County Board District 25 race

The discovery recount allows candidates to inspect certain precincts to verify the accuracy of vote totals but does not change the certified results unless a court orders further action.

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The race isn’t over yet as the discovery recount for County Board District 25 begins Monday at 8:30 a.m. Sangamon County Clerk Don Gray announced the timing for the recount on Thursday afternoon.

Democratic candidate Jennifer Merritt filed a petition Nov. 27 after losing by just seven votes to Republican incumbent Jennifer Ghesquiere Deaner. District 25 covers part of southwest Springfield.

Merritt received 1,914 votes, while Deaner garnered 1,921. Libertarian candidate Russ Clark finished with 271 votes.

Merritt’s petition requests a recount of votes in two specific precincts: Capital Precincts 52 and 85. The discovery recount allows candidates to inspect certain precincts to verify the accuracy of vote totals but does not change the certified results unless a court orders further action.
