(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The days of carrying a small plastic card to prove your identity may soon be over in Illinois. By the end of 2025, residents will be able to securely add driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet, thanks to an initiative by the Secretary of State’s office.

New legislation, that went into effect at the beginning of the year, enabled the office to begin developing mobile IDs earlier this year. The program, developed in collaboration with Apple, will undergo testing to ensure security and privacy.

Users will be able to present their ID by tapping their device and share only the information needed for transactions, such as proving age for legally purchasing alcohol or renting a car, while keeping other details private. Approval will require Face ID or Touch ID.

Mobile IDs will not replace physical cards and participation will be optional. Illinois will join 10 other states and territories offering mobile IDs. Plans also include expanding to Google Wallet for Android users.

House Bill 4592, sponsored by State Representative Kam Buckner and State Senator Michael Hastings, paved the way for this program.
