Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – While it was a short District 186 School Board meeting Tuesday night, the board did cover a lot of ground.
Superintendent Jennifer Gill took a moment to remember Alaina Daberkow, a Southeast High student recently lost to suicide. Gill reminded the board and the public that District 186 offers help and resources to students who are struggling, then led a moment of silence. Board President Micah Miller reiterated Gill’s message and urged anyone struggling to talk to someone, be kind, and take care of each other.
On a lighter note, after letting everyone know school is in session Wednesday, Gill said the weather has created quite the challenge for school administrators lately, balancing between safety and learning. She said snow has been starting around 6am, making it difficult to decide if they should close schools for the weather if no snow comes or if they should keep school open. Ultimately, however, Gill said the priority is to have students in school.
It looks like American Sign Language will be taught as a world language in District 186 high schools in the near future. The district will be posting for at least two ASL teaching positions. Secondary Schools and Programs Director Lance Thurman said a survey given to students indicated a great deal of interest in learning ASL, which would fulfill the requirement for students to take a course in World Languages.
Staff also reminded everyone about the upcoming Chili Supper Saturday from noon until 3 at Carl Sandburg School and that there is also still time to sign up for Springfield High’s Red & Black Gala Saturday night. Board Vice President Erica Austin and Superintendent Gill also urged everyone to take advantage of the district’s Black History Month learning resources and activities.
