(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A major fire in downtown Taylorville kept firefighters busy for hours overnight. The blaze broke out at 114 N. Main St.

When crews arrived just after 11 p.m. Tuesday, smoke was seen billowing from the roof, and firefighters encountered heavy smoke throughout the building. According to a news release, the department said they could not attack the fire from inside or locate its source, as flames had already breached the roof.

The structure fire was officially brought under control around 1:30 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Owaneco, Stonington, Assumption, Morrisonville-Palmer and Pana fire departments assisted.

City officials will meet with the building’s owner to address the structural damage.  The fire department reports that a portion of the road will be closed until it is deemed safe, or the building is removed.
