Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A Springfield man was shot and killed Tuesday night after responding to a traffic accident involving a woman he knew, police said.

Officers were called to a crash with injuries around 9:13 p.m. in the 2000 block of North Dirksen Parkway. When they arrived, officers reported they heard gunshots near the McDonald’s drive-thru and found a man on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said the victim, 51-year-old Jerald P. Fahey of Springfield went to the scene after the injured woman called him. He approached the other driver, which led to the shooting.

Fahey was taken to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m.

The suspect, Nicholas J. Kammueller, 46, of Rochester, was arrested at the scene. He faces charges including first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, DUI, and carrying a concealed firearm while intoxicated. He is being held at the Sangamon County Jail pending formal charges.
