Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The more things change, the more they stay the same.
That’s what members of the House Republican Freedom Caucus are saying with more than 48 hours to go in the legislative session, and they claim they haven’t seen a budget yet. And they say it probably won’t show any serious cuts.
The caucus held a news conference Thursday at the capitol, blasting Gov. JB Pritzker and Democratic leaders.
House Republican Leader Blaine Wilhour (R-Louisville) says look at what Democratic leadership did the most recent time one of their own tried to suggest change.
“Look at what they did to (State Rep.) Fred Crespo (D-Hoffman Estates). He puts forth a couple of ideas that aren’t really revolutionary, and get silenced, kicked off his committees, and everything else,” said Wilhour.
Crespo was removed as chair of an appropriations committee after the Republicans claim he spoke out.
“While other states have taken steps toward responsible, transparent fiscal management, Illinois continues to operate in the shadows,” said State Rep. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville), “encouraging secrecy, rushing decisions, forcing taxpayers to foot the bill without a voice in the process.”
With all that, one lawmaker says maybe President Trump should start withholding federal funds from the state until it cleans up its act.
“We spent $3.2 billion on illegals, we blew through $8 or $9 billion on COVID funds, and they’re going to set up this budget to cry about Donald Trump,” said State Adam Niemberg (R-Dietrich). “Our fiscal house is not in order. They continually raise taxes, and they continue to spend. But, instead of possibly getting in line with the Trump administration, they’re doubling down on these initiatives.”
The Freedom Caucus says it’s time Governor Pritzker realizes taxpayers aren’t, in their words, a human ATM.
The Illinois General Assembly is scheduled to adjourn on Saturday.
