Urbana, IL (CHAMBANA TODAY) – In a dramatic high-rise rescue Tuesday afternoon, Urbana firefighters rappelled nine stories to save two injured workers stranded on a suspended sky platform at the Florida Avenue Residence Hall.
The call came in at 2:52 p.m., as a routine medical emergency, but Engine 254, based at the University of Illinois, quickly realized the seriousness of the situation. Two workers were stuck outside the ninth floor of the building, unable to descend due to a platform malfunction.
Recognizing the urgency, the Urbana Fire Department summoned Ladder Truck 261, rope rescue teams, and additional engines. Firefighters accessed the roof and rappelled down to stabilize the victims. At the same time, a 135-foot sky lift was positioned to safely lower both individuals.
Thanks to fast coordination between Urbana Fire, Carle EMS, the University of Illinois, and on-site contractors, both workers were transported to the hospital without further incident. No firefighters were injured during the two-hour rescue.
Officials praised the operation as a powerful example of emergency readiness and inter-agency collaboration.
