Crimes involving the exploitation of minors is getting attention from the FBI.
The scam involves an offender coercing a minor to create images or video. An offender gets compromising material from the child, then threatens to release that material unless the victim produces more or to coerce money.
The FBI says victims are typically between the ages of 10 to 17, but any child can become a victim.
Over nearly two years the FBI received over 13,000 reports of online extortion of minors. The extortion involved at least 12,600 victims—primarily boys—and led to at least 20 suicides.
The FBI says online gaming, gaming consoles, livestreaming and video platforms, instant message apps, and social media are all opportunities for offenders to gain access to children.
