Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – An accident is being investigated involving an Illinois State Police squad car and a pedestrian in Springfield early Saturday.

According to a news release from Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon, a crash happened at South 6th Street and Linton Avenue.

A separate release from Illinois State Police (ISP) indicates the accident happened around 2:30 a.m.  They claim a pedestrian was bent down in the roadway when the trooper’s squad car struck that person.

“The Trooper rendered aid until EMS arrived on scene,” according to ISP.

While Allmon’s release doesn’t indicate the vehicle involved was a squad car, it does say a 45-year-old Springfield man was pronounced dead at Springfield Memorial Hospital at 3:12 a.m.   An autopsy will be conducted Monday.  The name of the victim is not being released, pending notification of next of kin.

According to ISP, an investigation is being convicted by their Division of Internal Investigation.  Allmon’s office is also investigating.

“ISP is currently processing evidence and conducting interviews,” said their news release.  “Upon completion of the investigation, all evidence and facts will be submitted for review to the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office.”
