Decades after forming its own trade association, Illinois wine is largely still a hidden gem.
“Oh no, “ says Lisa Ellis, executive director of the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Alliance, meeting in Springfield. “Our producers are small, without those massive budgets and major distribution channels, So we continue to get the message out that we can make excellent, world class, quality wines are right here in Illinois. And people can feel good about purchasing those, because it’s helping support the local economy.”
Karen Hand has just been named the state’s wine specialist and oversees the Shawnee Hills. “A lot of times people are just passing through (on) the interstates, and they see the ‘wine trail’ sign. Tourism is bringing a lot of people to the Shawnee Hills,” said Hand.
One presented, Chicago restaurateur Eduard Seitan, said advertising is one thing the industry could use more of. Seitan says he is doint his part by stocking at least one Illinois wine at at least one of his establishments.
