Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Springfield police chief Joe Behl (pictured) wants his troops to take care of themselves.

“Every officer is going to complete a WRAP form, which is a Wellness Recovery Action Plan, to find out what your baseline is for your wellness, and how do we get back there, and find out what your stressors are so we can try to manage that a little bit better. That’s just as much for the officer as it is for anybody.

“Peer support: we had a peer support program in the police department. One thing we did not have was an active peer support program in the police department.”

Behl told aldermen at their last meeting that the gymnasium has gotten a makeover, including a new paint job, to replace equipment which was perhaps fifteen years old, including dumbbells which, Behl said, dropped paint chips into your mouth. Behl said the Normal police chief, whom Behl described as a subject-matter expert, says the most important thing you can do in this area is get a good workout.
