Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Driver education fees are rising by 50 percent in District 186.

“We will increase the fee for behind-the-wheel from $100 to $150,” superintendent Jennifer Gill told the school board at its last meeting. “That would be waived if any students are eligible for free and reduced lunch, and then the other drivers ed fee is the permit. That has to stay $20, and people have to pay that amount. That’s not us, that’s the DMV.”

And May 22 will be a big day for Owen Marsh Elementary School: the district plans a ribbon-cutting for the revamped Owen Marsh Elementary School. When Gill discussed the demolition – popular with kids – of a mobile classroom – popular with nobody – board member Micah Miller said, “If there was an example of why we needed the one percent sales tax (county-wide for school construction), it is that right there. So to the mobile I would say, thank you for your service but good riddance!!

“And if he could talk back, he would say, yes, I went about ten years too long,” said Gill.
