The fallout from the stabbing death of an eleven-year-old boy and severe wounding of his mother – allegedly by a man released from prison one day earlier – now includes two members of the Prisoner Review Board.

Around midday Monday, Gov. JB Pritzker’s office issued a statement that the resignation of LeAnn Miller was the right thing to do. At day’s end, PRB chairman Donald Shelton also resigned, with Pritzker – in contrast with his wording in the Miller release – praised Shelton’s public service.

Crosetti Brand (pictured) has a history of domestic violence and, a day after being let out, allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend and her son. Reports indicate the son was trying to protect his pregnant mother.

Miller is getting the blame for steering the board toward Brand’s release, but a chief critic of how Pritzker has handled the PRB appointments says it’s not necessarily about blaming someone, though the resignation of Miller is a good start.

“Ultimately, it’s part of a broken process,” said State Sen. Jason Plummer (R-Edwardsville), the top Republican on the Senate Executive Appointments Committee. “That broken process has been designed in the governor’s office. Obviously, Ms. Miller was not the only person that voted to release this person. My understanding was she was the one who conducted the hearing with (Brand),

“If any one person is to be blamed for all this that has occurred, his name is JB Pritzker.”

Just before 6 p.m. Monday, the chair of the committee, State Sen. Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines), said via text message to WTAX News she had received no information from the governor’s office.
