The Chatham Police Department reports two pumps at the Shell station on Main Street were compromised by devices they believe were installed within the last several weeks.
Chatham Police say these devices have bluetooth capabilities, so criminals do not have to remove the device to retrieve user’s credit card information.
To avoid being a victim, police recommend you make sure the pump is intact on both sides, that the security tape is not cut or torn, and to watch for individuals parked beside a pump and not actually pumping fuel.
Police also recommend not using a PIN number at the pump, because it gives criminals access to your bank account. If you have to use a debit card, pay for gas inside the store.
The case remains under investigation.
