Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The new head of SIU Medicine comes to Springfield from Wisconsin.

According to a news release, the Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees has hired Dr. Ian Martin to take on the role.  He replaces Dr. Jerry Kruse, who is retiring, and whose contract ends August 31, 2026, following 43 years with SIU.

“I am deeply honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as the next provost, dean and CEO of SIU Medicine,” Martin said, in a news release. “SIU School of Medicine has a remarkable legacy of innovation in medical education, excellence in patient care, impactful research and service to the people of central and southern Illinois.”

Martin has most recently been eminent scholar, professor with tenure, and system chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin.  He graduated from Duke University, where he also spent time working, as well as the University of North Carolina and West Virginia University Schools of Medicine.

“I am excited to welcome Dr. Martin as we launch into the next era of healthcare leadership and innovation in our communities,” said Lucy Stafford, vice chair of SIU Medicine’s Healthcare Board, also in the news release. “His vision, collaborative leadership style and expertise in academic medicine and clinical operations will help strengthen SIU Medicine’s role as a leading provider of patient care.”
