Decatur, IL (WAND) – Police departments statewide observed Illinois Police Speed Awareness Day on Wednesday.
The goal of the day is to encourage safe driving habits across the state. The Illinois Department of Transportation reported 415 fatal crashes so far this year.
Illinois State Police Trooper Caleb Billingsley said every driver should know certain tips.
“Stay off your phone,” Billingsley said. “Construction zones are huge, so if you see a construction zone coming up, you’ve got to slow down and get over.”
This campaign falls in the middle of “The 100 Deadliest Days of Summer,” which runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
During this time, there are more young drivers, more construction and more traffic than usual.
“You could be the best driver in the world, but if someone next to you isn’t, you don’t know what can happen,” Billingsley said.
