Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Illinois State Fair is a week away.
On Thursday, the fair hosted its annual “Press Preview Day,” where it was more than apparently the 100th anniversary of Route 66 will go hand in hand with the event.
The fair will include the butter cow will be unveiled next Wednesday, and the fair officially opens the next morning.
One might say this year’s fair is getting revved up.
“Illinois proudly celebrates the centennial anniversary of the legendary Route 66,” said Jerry Costello, Director, Illinois Department of Agriculture, which puts on the fair. “We’re excited to announce that the Mother road herself will be the grand marshal of the Illinois State Fair Twilight Parade.”
The parade is Thursday, August 13, starting at 5:30 p.m.
There will also be classic car shows every day of the fair.
“In addition to the amazing one of a kind Route 66 Experience, the fair will also feature a Miles of Smiles Car Show every day of the fair,” said Rebecca Clark, State Fair Manager. “Every day, a different car club will be on display.”
It would be easy for someone like Scott Dahl, Springfield Tourism Director, to tell you about the thousands of hotel nights booked, and millions of dollars in economic impact on Springfield alone. But Dahl is also a board member of the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway, calling the Route 66 Experience gets a new part of its story at the fair.
“We are excited to announce a new addition to this experience. Coming next week, a nearly 25 foot tall, double-sided Cozy Dog, featuring authentic neon ketchup, and mustard, will be installed at the fairgrounds.,” said Dahl. “This incredible tribute recognizes Route 66 icons, and will also share the story of the Waldmire family, including Bob Waldmire and his family.”
There are a number of additions that have been made to the fair this year, including a children’s playground, and more family-friendly activities, along with grandstand acts, livestock shows, harness races, and other things.
