Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Two Springfield Police officers have been disciplined after a January shooting that happened in connection to the shooting death of a gang member days before.

Springfield Police say in a new transparency report one of two officers shot at a vehicle with stolen license plates January 10 as it tried to evade the officers. It was later determined that the shooting was justified and no criminal charges would be filed.

However, the two officers, who were only identified as Sergeant Raynolds and Officer Cortes, each served small suspensions because in testing whether or not their tasers were operating correctly, they failed to take their body-worn cameras back off “sleep mode” in violation of department policy.

“This incident unfolded under rapidly evolving, exigent circumstances and within a compressed timeframe, requiring officers to make critical decisions under significant stress,” said the report.

The suspect shot was later arrested, as were three others in the vehicle. All four people allegedly had guns in their possession.

“Following this incident, the Springfield Police Department implemented procedural changes designed to ensure personnel verify that body-worn cameras are in standby mode whenever responding to active law enforcement events,” said the report.
