Springfield, IL (Capitol City Now) – If you receive call from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, be aware that it could be a phone spoofing scam.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central Illinois District warns of a fraudulant phone call in which scammers may spoof office telephone numbers to deceive and defraud citizens with demands and threats for payment.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says it will not request money, personal details, or sensitive information by phone.

If you suspect you have received such a call, visit the FBI tip page or phone 1-800-CALL-FBI.

You can also:

  • Document the name and details the caller provides.
  • Hang up immediately and call the U.S. Attorney’s Office directly using the publicly listed numbers.
  • State that you may have been a target of a spoofing scam and ask to speak with the individual by name to verify if the call was legitimate.

U.S. Attorney for the Central Illinois District Gregory Gilmore says his office will not allow such tactics to “undermine the trust and safety of our communities”.
