DALTON CITY, Ill. (WAND) – Corn and soybean harvests are off to a fast start in central Illinois. Hot, dry weather has brought down corn moisture levels to ranges perfect for the fall harvest.
Just a day after Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer, the harvest is already in full swing in some areas.
“We got started last Thursday,” Kevin Walker at Legacy Co-op in Dalton City told WAND News. “We had a little dab of corn coming in then Friday we dumped maybe 100,000 (bushels) company-wide. Today, I don’t know what we’re going to get, but we’ll dump 100,000 here, I’m sure.”
Corn crops are a little further along than soybean crops. But our news crew observed one soybean field with up to five combines working at the same time.
Farmers said early corn yields are around 210 to 220 bushels an acre.
