SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – There’s a virus affecting cats at the Sangamon County Animal Control and Adoption Center, and it could be fatal.

According to a social media post, Animal Control says it’s called “panleukopenia.”  It’s said to be spread by cats that are unvaccinated and reduce white blood cell counts, potentially making it fatal while the cats may look healthy.

“Because of how easily this virus can spread, we are asking the public to please avoid bringing stray cats into the shelter unless it is absolutely necessary,” said a Facebook post.  “We understand that finding a stray cat can be concerning, and we appreciate everyone who wants to help. Right now, however, bringing additional cats into the shelter can increase the risk of exposure for them and for the cats already in our care.”

They are working on getting healthy cats out of the shelter and into foster homes for the time being.  They say if you want to foster a cat, call them.
