SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Some Democrats want President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth impeached, and soon.
Others say now is not the time and that there are bigger fish to fry.
Senator Dick Durbin says maybe impeachment can wait for a while.
“I’m not opposed to investigations. I’m certainly not opposed to accountability,” said Durbin (D-IL). “The leading issue for the Democrats in this campaign is helping families struggling with the cost of living. We’ve got to make sure that our message coming out of this election is ‘We are going to do that we promised. We will work with your family to make life better.'”
Durbin says along those lines, lawmakers need to work to reduce the cost of health insurance premiums, keep Medicaid in tact as it is, and — among things — end the war with Iran so the price of gas can be lowered.
Durbin spoke to reporters Friday at the Old State Capitol, where a naturalization service was held, making 26 people representing 11 countries legal U.S. citizens. He retires in January, and says he’d love to see something he’s long pushed for related to immigration finally passed by then: The “DREAM Act” — legislation that would help undocumented immigrants who came to the country as children get their own pathway toward citizenship.
“I feel like I know these dreamers personally,” said Durbin. “I’ve been working for them for so many years. They’ve been depending on me to do my job. I’m going to do everything I can to help them. I believe the DREAM Act will become the law of the land. The sooner, the better.”
As for that legislation or anything else, despite the so-called “blue wave” of the November 3 election, Durbin says Congress will still have to rely on President Trump, someone he calls “unpredictable.”
