You just may need to get used to hearing this: “Ray Ramsey Track and Field at Memorial Stadium.”

The late Springfield great’s daughter, Chris Ramsey Broeker spoke to a District 186 committee Monday, reading a letter from former State Journal-Register sports editor Jim Ruppert:

“Every single day we are losing our sense of history in Springfield,” she recited. “We have had an entire generation that thinks the world did not start spinning on its axis until the computer was invented. Ray Ramsey Track and Field at Memorial Stadium recognizes the man who spent hours and hours in that facility, working with males and females, Black and white. He was one of the greatest athletes the city has ever produced. He has earned the right to be recognized in his hometown. Period.”

The school board could take up the recommendation as soon as next Monday.
