Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – District 186 is joining other school districts in holding social media platforms accountable. The board voted unanimously at its Monday night meeting to join a class action lawsuit with Wagstaff and Cartmell Law Firm.
“Social media threats, social media videos that cause threats, or bully others through those platforms is part of the reason why we wanted to join in on this. Because that takes up a lot of our time these days, it’s inappropriate, it causes harm to other students and it causes harm to families,” said Superintendent Jennifer Gill.
The move allows the law firm to initiate litigation and file suit against any appropriate parties to seek compensation to the district for damages suffered by the district and its students as a result of the development, operation, and marketing of social media platforms, and to seek any other appropriate relief.
