Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – They came from different walks of life, but they all helped slaves gain their freedom. The Sangamon County Historical Society and the Springfield and Central Illinois African-American History Museum invite the public to learn more about six local citizens who served as Underground Railroad conductors.
Of the six local Underground Railroad conductors, two were white and four were African American, according to the Sangamon County Historical Society. Most had ties to President Abraham Lincoln, but faced great risks, including jail, for helping slaves escape to freedom.
At the event, see local actor Reggie Guyton portray William Donnegan. Task Force member and Tazewell County Clerk John Ackerman will provide an update on the State of Illinois Underground Railroad Task Force. A tour of the graves will follow the presentation. The event at the AAHM at 1440 Monument Ave. on Tuesday, May 21 starts at 5:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
