Springfield, IL. (CAPITOL CITY NOW) -This Memorial Day weekend, buckle up or you could get a ticket. Springfield police and Sangamon County deputies are stepping up seat belt enforcement through Memorial Day weekend.

“Whether you’re driving around the corner or across the nation, remember to buckle up every time,” said SPD Sergeant, Jeff Royer. “The ‘Click It or Ticket’ effort is about preserving lives. We want seat belt use to be second nature for all drivers and passengers.”

In 2022, SPD reports Illinois had 300 fatalities involving unrestrained passengers. National statistics, provided by SPD, estimate that 91.9% of people use seat belts, while Illinois boasts a 93% seat belt compliance rate.

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is funded with federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
