A common scam is to scare seniors out of their money, but lawmakers are taking aim at one of the tactics.
State Sen. Rachel Ventura’s (D-Joliet) bill has already passed the Senate: for the words “final notice” to include, prominently, that it’s an ad and not a bill or collection notice. So who are the bad actors here?
“The frustration is – this one says ‘Vehicle Services Division – that doesn’t even tell you what the business is that you would be sending money to. It’s hard to even identify who the bad actors are, because the disclaimers are not on these letters,” said Ventura at a Capitol news conference.
So we don’t know who sends these letters?
“Well, I’m sure you could call the 800 number and find out,” Ventura responded. “I have not called these numbers, because I consider these to be scam letters.”
SB 1440 has passed the Senate, 56-1.
