Pointing out two board members voted Present four years ago, … District 186 vice president Micah Miller cast the only No vote when it was time Monday to decide a contract extension for superintendent Jennifer Gill (pictured). Other board members suggested Miller was more supportive behind closed doors.

Board member Erica Austin said it’s unfair to blame Gill. “It’s not just her,” Austin said. “We say all the time it takes a village to raise a child well it takes a village to help this district be the best it can be.”

What about that sign on Harry Truman’s desk?

“You’re very right,” Gill said after Monday’s meeting. “The buck does stop with me. I realize that I am (the school board’s) only employee, and I have a host of individuals around me to help make the world spin, so to speak.”

Gill will get a five percent pay raise in the current school year and another one next year. She currently makes about $200,000.

Miller said he’s tired of hearing about low-performing schools parents want to transfer their kids out of.
