Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Firefighters worked for hours to put out the fire in the 400 block of East Adams that started Wednesday morning. Cafe Moxo Owner Mark Forinash said some smoke was initially detected around 10 a.m. and by 12 p.m. “everything kind of went south”.
The 413 E. Adams building, according to Springfield Fire Chief Ed Canny, sustained significant damage with all three floors of the building collapsing. Cafe Moxo, located in the building to the west of where the fire started, announced on social media that they will be closed “indefinitely” until they have been given the green light to go in and start assessing the losses and determine the time it will take to repair.
Moving Pillsbury Forward announced Wednesday that the Pillsburied exhibit located at 413 E. Adams was destroyed in the fire. Three tons of art and artifacts related to the old Pillsbury plant were lost.

One firefighter was injured battling the blaze and was taken to Springfield Memorial Hospital. On Wednesday afternoon, Canny said she was in stable condition. The cats at The Cat’s Pyjamas Cat Cafe, located in the building where the fire began, were all evacuated safely and were provided shelter at Buzz Bomb Brewing across the street. A cause of the fire has not yet been identified.
Ward 5 Alderwoman Lakeisha Purchase was in the neighborhood at the time smoke started billowing from the building. Purchase says as a cat mom, she was immediately worried about the cats at the cat cafe and was relieved to hear they all made it out safely. She said the business owners on Adams Street are like family and were already banding together as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. She said, “The community comes together, and they help each other out.”
