Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputies now have a man in custody in the death of 64-year-old Donna Romine. A family member was arrested after a standoff around 1 a.m. this morning, according to Sheriff Jack Campbell. Romine was found deceased at a home in the 3100 block of West Aire Drive in Springfield on Thursday. Deputies were performing a welfare check after callers reported they hadn’t heard from her in several days.
Deputies located the suspect early this morning and attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect drove off. After a short pursuit, he was surrounded. The man initially refused to exit his vehicle, but eventually threw an AR-15 rifle out of the car’s window and surrendered. Due to a medical event, he was transported to a local hospital. The case remains under investigation.
