Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – An early Sunday morning standoff with Springfield Police ended when an officer returned fire and a subject came out of the residence saying someone inside had been shot.

According to SPD Deputy Chief Sara Pickford, officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 2100 block of South 15th Street just after 1 a.m. Two men with gunshot wounds were found at the location. The victims directed officers to a home where rifle casings were located in the yard, and the occupants of the home were reportedly uncooperative and barricaded the door.

The Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Crisis Response Team (CRT) used a loud speaker attempting to establish communication with those inside. The release from Pickford states a subject fired from inside the residence striking a rescue vehicle occupied by multiple SPD officers. Additional gunfire was reportedly made, again striking the rescue vehicle.  At that time, an officer returned fire.

After SPD again attempted communication, a subject came out of the residence saying someone inside had a gunshot wound.

The ERT accompanied by a trauma doctor entered the residence secured the subjects and rendered aid.

SPD reports the two initial shooting victims and subject shot inside the home were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. No officers were injured during the incident.

Illinois State Police will complete an independent investigation, per state law.
