While District 186 continues to eye property along South Eleventh Street near Stevenson Drive for a new administrative center, another portion of that parcel is apparently not going to be the site of a new grade school.

After the board meeting Monday, superintendent Jennifer Gill told reporters, “We are making an offer for only five acres of that (30-plus acres of) land,” which includes the former H.D. Smith building, “and I think at this point in time we are not going to consider that property to build a school.”

Some, including board president Micah Miller, raised environmental concerns about the former Fiat-Allis site, but Gill would not disclose the reasons for dismissing the site for a new school. She said the district is still seeking a future school to replace Southern View, Laketown, and Hazel Dell schools.
