Sunday morning around 3, Springfield Police in the area of 13th and Cook were told of a man who was armed with a gun. The officers approached the man, later identified as 38 year old Joshua C. Mathies of Rockford who was sitting in a vehicle.
While officers were speaking with the driver, Mathies ran away on foot and was pursued by officers. Police saw an item in the waistband of Mathies and used a taser taking him into custody.
During the search of Mathies, a loaded Cobray M-11 9mm Mac 10 style handgun was recovered. Mathies was treated for minor injuries and transported to the Sangamon County Jail where he awaits formal charges from the Sangamon County States Attorney Office.
Mathies was arrested for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm – No FOID, and obstructing a police officer.
