Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Illinois State Museum is taking some of its exhibits and programs on the road due to a plumbing project. Starting Thursday, the museum at 502 S. Spring St. will close to visitors for the project that involves asbestos removal and construction.
Some objects and artifacts will be covered or removed during the plumbing and construction project. Staff will be based at the Research and Collections Center.
During the closure, museum staff will hit the road with community programming and exhibits as well as a display in the First Lady’s Tent at the Illinois State Fair from Aug. 8 – 18.
Museum programs and exhibits will also be found at the following locations during the closure: Vinegar Hill Mall, Lincoln Library, Henson-Robinson Zoo, the Dana-Thomas House State Historic Site, and others.
“While we are sad to close the Illinois State Museum for a few months, we’re excited about the improvements to the building and thrilled for the opportunity to serve the community through special programming and events,” said Jenn Edginton, acting director of the Museum. “Our team has been hard at work so that we can continue to bring the spirt of the Illinois State Museum to the people we serve.”
