Springfield, IL. (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Former Sangamon County deputy Sean Grayson appeared for a court hearing Friday via Zoom as part of a motion asking for reconsideration of pretrial release. The motion was denied.
Grayson’s lawyer submitted information to the court for the reconsideration, but the exhibits are sealed due to medical privacy. His trial date remains Aug 26.
On Thursday, the court approved a request for a change in representation for Grayson. Brian Sexton was terminated as co-counsel on the case. Daniel Fultz and Mark Wykoff are now serving as co-counsel for Grayson.
Grayson pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct in the shooting death of 36-year-old Sonya Massey in her home on July 6. Grayson was responding, along with another deputy, to a 911 call of a prowler.
Bodycam footage of the shooting was released July 22 by the Illinois State Police, who conducted an independent investigation.
In video footage, obtained by NBC Chicago, of Grayson during intake at the Menard County Jail on July 17, a day before his first court appearance, Grayson was heard saying he was in jail for his own safety, and he “couldn’t imagine they wouldn’t release him.”
