A story not often told is getting the documentary treatment.

You know that the Old State Capitol is where Lincoln gave his “House Divided” speech. But did you know that in the 1960’s, the building was dismantled brick by brick, then reassembled after they dug an underground parking garage?

“History Reborn” is the name of the documentary about the big project, and Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau director Scott Dahl says the attention – and ongoing projects around downtown – is most welcome.

“The renovations at the Old State Capitol will be completed, the renovations at the (current) State Capitol will be completed, and the transportation hub opening in 2025, all ahead of what we believe will be a record tourism year in 2026,” Dahl said. “With the 100th anniversary of Route 66, the nation’s 250th birthday, and North America hosting the World Cup. All these projects will be completed, and Springfield and our downtown will look amazing.”

The documentary, presented by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance, has a private premiere Thursday night in downtown Springfield.
