Here are some important reminders to ensure a safe and successful start to the school year:
1. Health Check: Prioritize physicals before the school bell rings. Please make sure your schoolchildren are ready to dive into their studies by making sure their physicals and immunizations are up to date. A healthy start sets the stage for a productive school year!
2. Safety First: School Bus Etiquette: The safety of our students is paramount, especially when it comes to traveling to and from school. Remember these rules when encountering a school bus on the road:
- Stopped School Buses: When a school bus is stopped with its lights activated and the stop sign extended, all motorists must come to a complete stop before reaching the bus. This applies regardless of the direction you’re traveling.
- Two-Lane Roads: If a school bus halts on a two-lane road and uses its visual signals, vehicles in both directions must stop until the bus begins moving again and the signals are turned off.
- One-Way Roadways: On a one-way street, regardless of the number of lanes, all traffic must halt when a school bus has its lights on, and the stop sign extended. Wait until the bus starts moving and the signals are turned off before proceeding.
- Four or More Lanes: If you’re on the road with four or more lanes and at least two lanes are traveling in the opposite direction of the school bus, only the lanes of traffic going in the same direction as the bus need to stop.
3. Consequences of Non-Compliance: The safety of our students is of the utmost importance. A first-time violation of failing to stop for a school bus with activated lights and an extended stop arm can result in a mandatory fine of $300 and a three-month suspension of driving privileges. Let’s work together to ensure the safety of our young learners.
As we gear up for the school year, let’s create an environment where learning and safety go hand in hand. By adhering to these guidelines and respecting our school buses and students, we can ensure a smooth and secure start to this academic journey.
