Now that Wednesday’s late-night detour is over, lawmakers are putting the budget proposal – announced at a news conference earlier Wednesday – through its paces.
Members of the Senate Appropriations Committee had their first public chance to discuss it. with State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) asking the chairmen, State Sen. Elgie Sims (D-Chicago) about the unknown impact of an upcoming AFSCME labor contract and about the slim margin between revenues and expenditures in the plan.
In both cases, Sims said agencies have been told to plan accordingly and held open the possibility of a supplemental budget as needed.
Revenues are projected at $50.717 billion. Expenditures are projected at $50.618 billion. The current fiscal year, which ends June 30, also tops $50 billion in both categories.
Presuming the Senate sends the budget to the House Thursday, the final approval could come no sooner than 12:01 a.m. Saturday, as the bill must be read on three separate days in the House. Those days could be Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The budget bill is here.
