It all began on Monday when an area hospital reached out to the Sangamon County Coroner’s office about an unclaimed body in their morgue for over a month.

When contacted the decedents family said they had received the cremains of their mother from Heinz Funeral Home in Macoupin County. The Sangamon County Coroner, Jim Allmon, had the unpleasant duty of informing the family those were not the remains of their mom.

On Thursday several law enforcement agencies descended on the Heinz Funeral Home and began to uncover what appears to be a systematic effort to present false remains to families.

During a Friday afternoon news conference with Allmon and Sheriff Jack Campbell it was also revealed that three unidentified and decaying bodies were found on the property and taken by the Coroner’s office.

Allmon claims that in one instance a body was cremated under the wrong name.

Allmon says his office is making every effort to correctly identify remains and any family with concerns should reach out to his office.
