This is the day some celebrate and others fear: the end of cash bail in Illinois.
Supporters of the move, a component of the 2011 Safe-T Act, say cash bail discriminates against poor people who have merely been arrested, not convicted. Those arrested who have access to resources can simply walk out of jail while awaiting trial.
Apart from safety concerns, there is a financial component to the argument to preserve cash bail.
“How are (Sangamon and Macon counties) going to make up that $4 million?” asks State Sen. Steve McClure (pictured) (R-Springfield). “And that doesn’t just pay for restitution for victims. It also pays for court services, etc. Who is going to make up the shortfall there?”
