Political grandstanding. That’s what Governor Pritzker says sheriffs from across the state are doing as they publicly push back against the new assault weapons ban.  The law, bans the sale and distribution of assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and switches in Illinois.  Many of the sheriffs say they will not enforce the provision that  requires current owners of prohibited weapons to register them with the state police, because it is a violation of the second amendment.

Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell is among the sheriffs speaking out.  He says he will not house or arrest law abiding individuals that have been arrested solely for  non-compliance with this act, without a warrant, court order, or circumstances that deem that person a safety threat.

Pritzker says these law enforcement officials took an oath to serve.  He says, “they don’t get to choose what laws to enforce.”  Pritzker adds he’s confident that this is a constitutional law, and it will be confirmed by the court system.
