Friday the Illinois Supreme Court issued an order directing counties across Illinois to delay implementation of the Pretrial Fairness Act until the high court has had a chance to review the Kankakee County decision finding the law unconstitutional.
The law often referred to as the SAFE-T Act would do away with the cash bail system for many crimes committed in Illinois including arson and assault.
The law was set to go into effect January 1st.
Many groups say the legal basis for the ruling was weak and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul says his office is looking forward to mounting a robust defense of the constitutionality of the law and ensuring that it goes into effect across the state.
